We're glad you're concerned about your health and your fellow Gryphons health.
Unfortunately, the school does not feel the same.

The University of Guelph appears to be more concerned about profits, rather than the health of human beings: "manufacturers of hand dryers argue that air drying can cut costs by as much as 99.5%" (Schwarcz, 2017).
With the return of paper towels, we can finally have clean hands and have a sanitary way to leave bathrooms by using old paper towels as a barrier from the door handle.
The University of Guelph replaced many hand dryers with paper towel dispensers during the COVID-19 period, being the years 2019-2022.
In each periods respective "Fact Book," the school notes that in response to COVID-19:
These quotes clearly demonstrate that the school acknowledges paper towels as more sanitary than hand dryers. Do we not deserve proper hygiene just because COVID-19 isn't as prominent anymore?

It is clear that there are ZERO hygenic advantages to using hand dryers over paper towels. The only advantages hand dryers bring, is the argument "that air drying can cut costs by as much as 99.5%" (Schwarcz, 2017). Clearly, the school only cares about profits, not us.
The school classifies paper towels as food waste, according to their 2024 waste audit (Vasilivetsky, 2024). Therefore, you can rest assured paper towels are being handled as food waste.
Although sample size decreased ~600kg in 2022, it is observed paper towel waste decreased in 2022 compared to 2019 (the only two years with waste samples) (Waste Reduction Group Inc, 2019; Waste Reduction Group Inc, 2023).

This winter season, many people come down with common colds. Unfortunately, many resort to blowing their noses with toilet paper.
Considering the environment toilet paper is often kept in, as found in the video above, it surely must be understandable why many of us want disposable paper towels back in our washrooms.
It is appalling that in the "season of sniffles," the school FORBIDS their students from using
Consider how gastroenteritis spreads: unwashed hands.
Not to mention toilet splashback - no matter how small the risk, it's still disgusting and life-threatening.

Clearly, this video effectively demonstrates that hand dryers are quite disgusting.
First and foremost, all our sources are clearly cited on our website. There is no nonsense—everything is thoroughly verified.
We acknowledge your concern for the environment. Yes, paper towels have a measurable impact on the environment, more so than hand dryers. However, paper towels outclass hand dryers in hygiene, which we believe is more important, as it saves the lives of
Many universities, including the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University, use paper towels in their washrooms. However, following the crowd might not always be wise.
The University of Guelph will determine whether to follow the practices of other universities. Paper towels remain optional, as many UofG bathrooms are equipped with both dispensers and dryers.
The option is valuable. Many of us, including non-signatories, support the return of paper towels. We ask you not to vandalize our work—you do not know what this website, these QR codes, and our petition mean to us.
